In Slowenien leben schätzungsweise 10.000 Roma. Die Region Prekmurje gilt als positives Beispiel für die slowenische Minderheitenpolitik (siehe dazu etwa hier). Hier leben selbstbewusste Roma, sagt Josef Horvath. Noch vor 70 Jahren wohnten hier Slowenen, Ungarn, Roma, Juden und Deutsche, bevor der Zweite Weltkrieg das Zusammenleben beendete. Inmitten von Murska Sobota, der Hauptstadt der Prekmurje, befinden sich auch das Büro der lokalen Roma-Union und die Zentrale ihres Bundesverbands, von deren 23 Mitgliedsvereinen zehn aus der Prekmurje kommen, so Horvath weiter.
„Sozialer Status ist relativ gut“
Die Jugendlichen hier machen fast alle ihren Schulabschluss. Viele Roma seien erwerbstätig, wenn auch häufig nur als Saisonarbeiter. Außerdem seien viele Roma-Siedlungen in der Region mittlerweile legalisiert worden und wurden mit Wasser und Elektrizität versorgt. Besonders stolz ist man auf die autonome Roma-Siedlung Puščca, die gerade ihr hundertjähriges Bestehen feiert. Der soziale Status der Roma ist vergleichsweise gut. Die 750-Seelen-Gemeinde verfügt nicht nur über eine eigene Feuerwehr und einen Fußballverein, hier wurde vor knapp 50 Jahren auch der erste Roma-Kindergarten gegründet, der heute auch von slowenischen Kindern besucht wird, erzählt Horvath. „Wir sind hier den anderen Regionen gefühlte 50 Jahre voraus“, sagt Josef Horvath.
