Dieses charmante Filmdokument einer Zufallsbegegnung während Bob Dylans Englandtour 1965 ist als Extra auf der DVD von „Dont Look Back“ von D. A. Pennebaker (1967) enthalten, als Blu-ray und DVD erschienen in der Criterion Collection.
Wenn man den vielen User-Kommentaren von angeblich Beteiligten und ihren Verwandten und Nachfahren Glauben schenkt, hat die Familie dieses Fundstück im Internet entdeckt – und sich scharenweise auf der Youtube-Seite eingefunden. Dass dieser denkwürdige kleine Moment mit Bob Dylan und Joan Baez als besondere Anekdote in die Familiengeschichte eingegangen ist, wollen wir jedenfalls gerne glauben.
Vom Wort zur Tat: Von der Medienhetze gegen „Zigeuner“ war es nur noch ein kleiner Schritt zum Roma-Holocaust.
Vor (fast) exakt 80 Jahren, am 3. März 1939, veröffentlichte die Wiener Wochenzeitung „Illustrierte Wochenpost“, Nr. 9, S. 8, unter dem Titel „Zigeuner – die große Landplage“ einen ganzseitigen Artikel über die österreichischen Roma. Von dieser rassistischen Hetze, die an einen jahrzehntelangen medialen Diskurs anknüpfte, war es jetzt nur mehr ein kleiner Schritt zum Holocaust. Etwa neun Zehntel der Roma des Burgenlandes wurden kurz darauf deportiert und ermordet.
„Die Zigeunerfrage, die bisher im Altreich eine relativ unbedeutende Rolle gespielt hat, ist in der Ostmark ein brennendes Problem“, heißt es in dem Artikel. „Und zwar ein Problem der Rassenmischung sowohl wie der Kriminalität.“ Dem Reporter G. Ebert, der angeblich vor Ort im Burgenland recherchierte, habe sich „der nachhaltige Eindruck einer kulturellen Verkommenheit und Degeneration, die ekelerregend ist“, ergeben – die Tonalität des gesamten Artikels zielt auf Entmenschlichung ab.
Im Rahmen des Artikels abgedruckt ist auch ein Schreiben des Bürgermeisters von Sankt Margarethen (Bezirk Eisenstadt-Umgebung). Bürgermeister Unger war offenbar einer jener zahlreichen Scharfmacher auf lokaler Ebene, welche die nationalsozialistischen Behörden zu immer radikaleren Verfolgungsmaßnahmen drängten und deren Vernichtungswillen erst so richtig befeuerten. Als Vorwand dienten einmal mehr die angeblich horrenden Fürsorgekosten, welche die verarmte Romabevölkerung für die Kommunen bedeutete. So gipfelt auch dieser Artikel mit einem abschließenden Ruf nach drastischen Maßnahmen gegen das „arbeitsscheue Parasitenvolk“, das man da „großgezogen“ habe, „niemanden (sic!) zunutze und allen zum Schaden“. „Die Gemeinden, die Zigeuner beherbergen müssen, rufen nach Lösung der Zigeunerfrage (…)“.
Das Romani ist keine homogene Sprache, sondern wird in mehrere große Dialektgruppen unterteilt. Eine davon ist das Zentrale Romani. Auch bei diesem Dialektstrang unterscheidet die Sprachwissenschaft zwei Untergruppen: das Nördliche und das Südliche Zentrale Romani. Ein digitaler Sprachatlas der Karls-Universität Prag, der 2011 bis 2013 erarbeitet wurde, führt die vielfältigen Unterschiede der Varietäten des Zentral-Romani per Mausklick vor Augen. Diesem „Linguistic Atlas of Central Romani“ ist auch die hier gezeigte Grafik mit den Belegorten des Nördlichen (weiß)und des Südlichen Zentralen Romani (blau) entnommen. Zu Letzterem zählt auch das sog. Roman, der Dialekt der Burgenland-Roma.
Auszug aus „Novemberpogrom“, einem Text des Wiener Schriftstellers und Historikers Doron Rabinovici (2013):
(…) Der Schriftsteller Franz Fühmann erinnerte sich: „Es muß 1943 gewesen sein, im Sommer, in Wien, in der Rilkezeit, da zeigte die Wochenschau Bilder aus einem Konzentrationslager, und man sah drei Häftlinge mit dem Judenstern, die, offensichtlich Mitte irgendeiner Kette, einander langsam Steine zureichten … Der Kommentator bemerkte, daß die Juden das erste Mal in ihrem Leben arbeiteten, was man ja auch an dem rasanten Tempo ihrer Bewegungen sehe, und das Publikum brüllte vor Lachen, und ich erstarrte, denn man sah Sterbende mit verlöschender Kraft die Arme ausstrecken und Steine von Sterbenden empfangen und Steine an Sterbende weitergeben. Es war ein österreichisches Gelächter; Gelächter meines Heimatlandes“, schrieb Fühmann.
Ist dieses Gelächter heute gänzlich erstorben? Kurz nachdem 1995 im burgenländischen Oberwart vier Roma durch eine Bombe ermordet worden waren, ging in Wels eine als sogenannte Zigeuner verkleidete Gruppe in einem Faschingsumzug mit. Als sie an der Festbühne vorbeizog, da scherzte der Moderator: „Bitte jetzt keine Bomben werfen!“ Die Menge johlte. (…)

Nur jeder zehnte österreichische Rom erlebte 1945 die Befreiung vom NS-Regime. Die wenigen, die aus den Konzentrationslagern zurückkehrten, fanden zerstörte Siedlungen vor. Wie Österreichs Behörden mit den KZ-Überlebenden umgingen, illustriert ein Erlass aus dem Jahr 1948. Nur drei Jahre nach der Befreiung, am 20. September 1948, verfügte das von Oskar Helmer (SPÖ), einem Burgenländer, geführte Innenministerium Folgendes (Dokument aus der Ausstellung „Romane Thana“, noch zu sehen bis 17. Mai 2015 im „Wien Museum“):
„Dem ho. Amte ist zur Kenntnis gelangt, dass das Zigeunerunwesen in einigen Gegenden (…) wieder im Zunehmen begriffen ist und sich bereits unangenehm bemerkbar macht. Um auf die Bevölkerung Eindruck zu machen, sollen sich Zigeuner oftmals als KZ-ler ausgeben. Soweit (…) die Möglichkeit einer Ausserlandschaffung gegeben erscheint, wäre gegen lästige Zigeuner mit der Erlassung eines Aufenthaltsverbotes vorzugehen und ihre Ausserlandschaffung durchzuführen.“
Der russisch-amerikanische Filmstar Yul Brynner, der sich der Kultur der Roma stets eng verbunden fühlte, nahm mit dem berühmten russischen Roma-Musiker Aliosha Dimitrievitch 1967 ein Album mit russischen Roma-Liedern auf (The Gypsy and I). Auch wenn die Betonung seiner angeblichen Roma-Abstammung wohl vor allem der selbstgestrickten Mystifizierung seiner Herkunft geschuldet ist (hier unser Artikel von 2006), war es Brynner mit seinem Eintreten für die Belange der Roma sehr ernst: Er war einer der prominentesten Fürsprecher der Roma-Bürgerrechtsbewegung, die sich in den 1970er-Jahren auf internationaler Ebene zu formieren begann. Nicht von ungefähr war Yul Brynner auch Ehrenpräsident des Roma-Weltverbandes, der International Romani Union (IRU).
