Die Schrift als Motorisierung des Selbstbewusstseins
Dieter W. Halwachs/Der Standard, 7.8.2012: Das Romani oder Romanes zählt zum indoarischen Zweig der indoeuropäischen Sprachen; Roma sind somit die einzigen Arier Europas. Seit Jahrhunderten auf heute österreichischem Gebiet gesprochen, ist es seit 1993 anerkannte Volksgruppensprache. Romani wird heute von einigen zehntausend Personen in Österreich verwendet.
Am längsten auf österreichischem Territorium leben Burgenland-Roma. Die stehen auch am Anfang der Emanzipationsbestrebungen Ende der 1980er-Jahre. Infolge der Selbstorganisation ergeben sich Kontakte mit anderen Roma. Dadurch wird der vom Genozid ausgelöste, kontinuierliche Rückgang in der Sprachverwendung als Verlust empfunden; fast 90 Prozent der in den 1930er-Jahren registrierten 6000 bis 7000 Burgenland-Roma wurden in den Konzentrationslagern ermordet. Die bis dahin kaum bewusst wahrgenommene eigene Sprache wird zum Identitätsfaktor, es kommt zu ersten Bemühungen um Spracherhalt.
Mit Herbst 1993 startet das Projekt zur Kodifizierung und Didaktisierung des Roman, wie die Burgenländer ihre Sprache bezeichnen. Publikationen erscheinen ab 1995, zwei Jahre später werden erste Sprachkurse angeboten. Innerhalb eines Jahrzehnts ändert sich der Status des Roman grundlegend. Anfangs kaum wahrgenommen und vom Aussterben bedroht, ist es heute der prominenteste Dialekt einer anerkannten Volksgruppensprache. Der öffentliche Gebrauch des Roman trägt zur Stärkung des Selbstwertgefühls und damit zum Selbstbewusstsein junger Burgenland-Roma bei; ein Aspekt, der über sprachpflegerischem Folklorismus steht.
