Die Stiftung „Topographie des Terrors“ in Berlin wird am Freitag, den 7.5.2010 (Anm. d. Red.: der Festakt anlässlich der Einweihung erfolgt heute Donnerstag) ihr neues Dokumentationszentrum mit einer Dauerausstellung eröffnen. Der Zentralrat Deutscher Sinti und Roma (Website) fühlt sich ausgegrenzt. Der Vorsitzende des Zentralrats der Roma und Sinti in Deutschland, Romani Rose, bemängelt, dass keinem Vertreter der Sinti und Roma die Gelegenheit zu einer Ansprache geboten wird. Es kann nicht sein, dass die Volksgruppe, die ebenso dem nationalsozialistischen Völkermord zu Opfer fiel, sichtbar ausgegrenzt wird, so Rose (siehe auch dROMa-Blog). In der heutigen Ausgabe der Tageszeitung „Der Standard“ zieht ein Artikel von Doris Griesser anerkennend Bilanz über zwanzig Jahre Arbeit, die ein Forschungsteam rund um den Grazer Sozioloinguisten Dieter Halwachs in den Dienst des Spracherhalts der österreichischen Romani-Varietäten gestellt hat.  Das Burgenland-Romani ist dank dieser Bemühungen heute weltweit eine der am besten beschriebenen Roma-Sprachen. Engstens verbunden mit den Grazer Team ist übrigens seit jeher unser Verein Roma-Service, dessen Projekte im Artikel mehrfach gestreift werden:

Alles begann eher zufällig, als der renommierte Soziolinguist Norman Denison vor knapp zwanzig Jahren einen studentischen „Althippie“ zu seinem Assistenten an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz machte. Worüber sich damals mancher alterierte, entpuppte sich bald als Glücksfall für die vom Untergang bedrohte Sprache der Burgenland-Roma. Denn Dieter Halwachs nahm den Hilferuf des Roma-Aktivisten Emmerich Gärtner-Horvath – „Unsere Sprache verschwindet, kannst du was für uns tun?“ – sehr ernst und hatte offenbar auch das richtige Gespür für die Menschen, um die es dabei ging. Heute gilt die Sprachwissenschaft an der Uni Graz gemeinsam mit den Linguistikinstituten in Manchester und Prag als eines der wichtigsten Romani-Forschungszentren in Europa.
