Mein erster Film (Eine lästige Gesellschaft) war eine Spurensuche nach dem Schicksal meiner Großmutter. In Roma Memento kommt nun meine Mutter zu Wort. Der Film handelt von den Auswirkungen des Verlustes, den die Ermordung meiner Großmutter mit sich gebracht hatte. Ihre Kindheit hat meine Mutter bis an ihr Lebensende geprägt. Sie erzählt im Film, wie schlimm es für sie war, als Kind mit stetigen Anfeindungen zu leben. Es ging nicht allein um ihre Herkunft, sondern auch um das Nicht-Wissen ihrer Herkunft. Sie wurde gehänselt, in der Schule wurde sie „Papua-Neger“ gerufen. Doch sie wusste lange Zeit nicht, weshalb sie überhaupt angefeindet wurde – dass sie eine Romni ist. Ein weiterer Teil des Films thematisiert die gegenwärtige Situation der Roma.

Das reißerische Cover und der tendenziöse Text, der die Roma und Sinti in der Schweiz pauschal als kriminell verunglimpfte, sorgte über die Schweizer Grenzen hinweg für Aufregung. (Anm.: Wir berichteten hier, hier und hier.) Neben dem Zentralrat deutscher Sinti und Roma brachte auch der österreichische Journalist Klaus Kamolz eine Anzeige wegen Verhetzung ein. Kruck: Kurz nach dem Artikel haben sie zu mir gesagt: „Bitte, mach nichts, protestiere nicht, sonst wird es noch schlimmer.“ Das ist die Angst von allen – dass man noch stärker diskriminierter wird. Es gibt in der Schweiz die Minderheit der Jenischen, die zum Teil fahrende Leute sind – und die wurden sofort attackiert. Aber auch die Roma müssen darunter leiden. Das Cover suggeriert ja, dass alle Roma Verbrecher sind. Das wären dann also 12 Millionen Verbrecher in Europa. Das ist absolut inaktzeptabel. Was mich aber am allermeisten erschüttert hat, waren die Reaktionen der Bevölkerung. Von 153 Postings unter einem Tagesschau-Bericht über das Weltwoche-Cover waren 150 Postings pro Weltwoche, nur drei Kommentare waren halbwegs kritisch. Gitarrengroßmeister Harri Stojka sorgt seit Jahren beständig für musikalische Aufmerksamkeit auf hohem Niveau. Abseits der Konzertbühne ließ er zudem im Frühjahr 2012 aufhorchen, als er die Fotoaktion „Ich bin gegen das Wort Zigeuner“ initiierte. Diese Fotoaktion ist auch der Ausgangspunkt unseres ausführlichen Gesprächs: Die erste Foto-Session fand am „Internationalen Antirassismustag 2012“ statt, weitere werden folgen. Die Bezeichnung ‚Zigeuner‘ ist ein negativ behafteter Begriff und das Schlimmste ist, dass daran viele Vorurteile gebunden sind, die den Alltag der Roma und Sinti erschweren. Ziel der Fotoaktion ist nun, Bewusstsein und Sensibilisierung zu schaffen und letztendlich das beleidigende Wort aus unserem Wortschatz zu verbannen.

Die Auseinandersetzung mit Verfolgung und Terror in der NS-Zeit ist vielfach auf Wissen und Erfahrung von ZeitzeugInnen angewiesen. Mangelnde Archivquellen sowie eine bewusste Verschleierung während und nach der NS-Herrschaft ließen das Leid einzelner Gruppen und Menschen über Jahrzehnte im Dunkeln. Mit der Oral History gerieten deren Leidenserfahrungen in das Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Zugänge sind im Fall der Burgenland-Roma dennoch relativ rar. Erst 2009 präsentierte der burgenländische Verein Roma-Service eine Edition von Interviews mit den letzten Holocaust-Überlebenden und deren Nachkommen. In einem weiteren Projekt wurden nun BurgenländerInnen mit unterschiedlichen religiösen, sprachlichen und sozialen Zugehörigkeiten gebeten, ihre Lebensgeschichten zu erzählen. Die DVD entstand in Kooperation des Vereins Roma-Service mit dem ORF Burgenland.
Gedenkveranstaltung in Lackenbach
Das sogenannte Zigeuner-Anhaltelager Lackenbach wurde im November 1940 auf dem „Schaflerhof“, einem ehemaligen Esterhazyschen Gutshof in Lackenbach, eingerichtet. Bis zu 4.000 Roma und Sinti mussten hier bis Kriegsende unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen Zwangsarbeit verrichten, nur die wenigsten von ihnen haben den Holocaust überlebt. Der einstige Gutshof und die Lagerbaracken sind heute verschwunden. In den 1980er Jahren wurde in Lackenbach ein Mahnmal errichtet, bei dem jedes Jahr im November der Opfer gedacht wird.
