es kommt nicht oft vor, dass sich Roma, die sich als Sportler ganz nach oben gekämpft haben, öffentlich zu ihrer Herkunft bekennen. Zu harsch ist die Ablehnung, die ihnen in diesem Bereich noch immer entgegenschlägt. Sportliche Leistungen sind nichts, womit die Mehrheitsgesellschaft Roma in Verbindung bringen will. Dabei gibt es (besonders in den proletarischen Sparten des Fußball- und Boxsports) in den Reihen der Nationalteams und Olympiasieger, der Welt- und Europameister nicht wenige Roma.

Kurier, 21.6.2012: Gleich zwei Projekte aus dem Landessüden wurden mit dem  Fred-Sinowatz-Wissenschaftspreis ausgezeichnet. Im Rahmen eines Festaktes im Österrei­chischen Jüdischen Museum in Eisenstadt überreichte Landesrat Helmut Bieler Dienstag­abend die Auszeichnung, die mit 1000 Euro dotiert ist. Dem südburgen­ländischen Verein Roma-Service, vertreten durch Obmann Emmerich Gärtner-Horvath (und Josef Schmidt), wurde der Wissenschaftspreis für die als DVD- und Print-Edition veröffentlichte Zeitzeugen-Dokumentation „Mri Historija. Lebensgeschichten burgen­ländischer Roma“ zuerkannt. Der Verein hat sich die Bewahrung und Dokumentation der Kultur der Burgenland-Roma zum Ziel gesetzt.

Die in Eisenstadt lebende Historikerin Renate Schönfeldinger erhielt den Preis für ihr Buch „Sie werden leben!“, in dem sie die selbstlose Rettung ungarischer jüdischer Zwangsarbeiter durch eine südburgen­ländische Familie in den letzten Kriegsmonaten 1945 dokumentiert hat. Es ist eine EM der Kleinen: die „Europeada“, die erstmals 2008 – parallel zur regulären Europameisterschaft – im rätoromanischen Teil der Schweiz (in Graubünden) über die Bühne ging und diesmal im sorbischen Sprachgebiet in Deutschland (Lausitz) ihre Fortsetzung findet. Rund 20 Teams ermitteln bei dem vom Minderheitenverband FUEN mitorganisierten Turnier den Meister der europäischen Sprachminderheiten. Wieder mit von der Partie ist das „Nationalteam“ der ungarischen Roma, das 2008 auf dem Weg ins Finale nur am späteren Sieger Südtirol gescheitert ist und sich schließlich mit dem dritten Platz begnügen musste. Es ist dies übrigens jenes unter Burgenland-Roma bis heute legendäre Roma-Team, das seine offizielle Premiere 1995 hatte: in Unterwart mit einem fulminanten Sieg gegen den burgenländischen AS Roma, über den wir in der kommenden Ausgabe von dROMa berichten.

Das reißerische Cover und der tendenziöse Text, der die Roma und Sinti in der Schweiz pauschal als kriminell verunglimpfte, sorgte über die Schweizer Grenzen hinweg für Aufregung. Es gibt in der Schweiz die Minderheit der Jenischen, die zum Teil fahrende Leute sind – und die wurden sofort attackiert. Aber auch die Roma müssen darunter leiden. Das Cover suggeriert ja, dass alle Roma Verbrecher sind. Das wären dann also 12 Millionen Verbrecher in Europa. Das ist absolut inaktzeptabel. Was mich aber am allermeisten erschüttert hat, waren die Reaktionen der Bevölkerung. Die Auseinandersetzung mit Verfolgung und Terror in der NS-Zeit ist vielfach auf Wissen und Erfahrung von ZeitzeugInnen angewiesen. Mangelnde Archivquellen sowie eine bewusste Verschleierung während und nach der NS-Herrschaft ließen das Leid einzelner Gruppen und Menschen über Jahrzehnte im Dunkeln. Mit der Oral History gerieten deren Leidenserfahrungen in das Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Zugänge sind im Fall der Burgenland-Roma dennoch relativ rar. Erst 2009 präsentierte der burgenländische Verein Roma-Service eine Edition von Interviews mit den letzten Holocaust-Überlebenden und deren Nachkommen. In einem weiteren Projekt wurden nun BurgenländerInnen mit unterschiedlichen religiösen, sprachlichen und sozialen Zugehörigkeiten gebeten, ihre Lebensgeschichten zu erzählen. Das Ergebnis ist ein beeindruckender Überblick über die Vielfalt der Erfahrungen im Burgenland des 20. Jahrhunderts, der über den Gegensatz zwischen Diskriminierung und Toleranz hinausgeht.
