Der Mitbegründer und stellvertretende Vorsitzende des Bayerischen Landesverbands Deutscher Sinti und Roma, Franz Rosenbach, der die Konzentrationslager Auschwitz, Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora überlebte, verstarb am Sonntag im Alter von 85 Jahren in Nürnberg.
Pressemitteilung, 8.10.2012: Der am 29. September 1927 in Horaditz (Sudetenland/Tschechien) geborene Franz Rosenbach wurde im März 1943 – im Alter von 15 Jahren – wegen seiner Zugehörigkeit zur Volksgruppe der Sinti an seiner Ausbildungsstelle bei der Deutschen Reichsbahn in Göpfritz an der Wild (Niederösterreich) verhaftet und gemeinsam mit seinen ebenfalls verhafteten Eltern, Geschwistern und zahlreichen Verwandten in das Konzentrationslager Auschwitz-Birkenau deportiert. Seine Eltern und eine ältere Schwester sowie zahlreiche weitere Angehörige liessen dort ihr Leben. Franz Rosenbach wurde später in die Konzentrationslager Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora verlegt, wo er im Stollenbergbau unter unmenschlichsten Bedingungen Sklavenarbeit leisten musste, bevor er im Frühjahr 1945 gezwungen wurde, am Todesmarsch nach Hamburg-Neuengamme teilzunehmen, von wo ihm kurz vor Kriegsende die Flucht gelang.
Herr Rosenbach war Gründungsmitglied des Verbands Deutscher Sinti und Roma – Landesverband Bayern e.V. und seit 1988 für den Landesverband – dessen stellvertretender Vorsitzender er seit 12 Jahren war – tätig. Franz Rosenbach war zugleich Ehrenvorsitzender des Zentralrats Deutscher Sinti und Roma.
In zahlreichen Zeitzeugengesprächen an bayerischen Schulen und Einrichtungen der Erwachsenenbildung berichtete Franz Rosenbach seit 25 Jahren über sein Verfolgungsschicksal, über das zu sprechen ihm zuvor über 40 Jahre lang – wie er selbst sagte – unmöglich war. Die Bayerische Landeszentrale für politische Bildungsarbeit veröffentlichte im Jahr 2005 eine Biographie von Franz Rosenbach mit dem Titel „Der Tod war mein ständiger Begleiter“.
Die VHS der Burgenländischen Roma lud zur Veranstaltung „Die Holocaust-Opfer der Roma“ in die „Dorfscheune Buchschachen“ ein. Hermann Pferschy, Bürgermeister der Marktgemeinde Markt Allhau, hielt vor dem zahlreich erschienenen Publikum die Eröffnungsrede. Die Verfolgung der Roma vor und während der Nazizeit blieb lange im Dunkeln. Seit den 80er Jahren beschäftigen sich Historiker verstärkt mit diesem Kapitel der österreichischen Geschichte. Aber erst in den letzten Jahren ist Bewegung in die Forschung gekommen. Im Auftrag des Kulturvereins der Österreichischen Roma haben Wissenschafter in einem umfangreichen Forschungsprojekt die Deportation der Roma untersucht. Dabei sind die Historiker zu neuen und teils überraschenden Erkenntnissen gekommen, etwa was die Rolle der lokalen Behörden (Bürgermeister) anbelangt. Dem Historiker Gerhard Baumgartner und seinen Kollegen ist es gelungen, herauszufinden, wohin tausende Roma deportiert wurden und wo sie umgekommen sind. Kurier, 21.6.2012: Gleich zwei Projekte aus dem Landessüden wurden mit dem Fred-Sinowatz-Wissenschaftspreis ausgezeichnet. Im Rahmen eines Festaktes im Österreichischen Jüdischen Museum in Eisenstadt überreichte Landesrat Helmut Bieler Dienstagabend die Auszeichnung, die mit 1000 Euro dotiert ist.Dem südburgenländischen Verein Roma-Service, vertreten durch Obmann Emmerich Gärtner-Horvath (und Josef Schmidt), wurde der Wissenschaftspreis für die als DVD- und Print-Edition veröffentlichte Zeitzeugen-Dokumentation „Mri Historija.
