Der Rom Josef Horwath (Anm.: zu seiner Lebensgeschichte siehe auch H. 11 unserer Zeitzeugenedition Mri Historija) wurde 1944 auf der Flucht geboren: „Im Jahr 1939, da sind sie in der Nacht gekommen und haben die ganzen Roma zusammengetrieben“, sagt Josef Horwath, wenn er sich an die Worte seiner Mutter erinnert. Sie konnte damals durch Hilfe eines guten Bekannten flüchten und in Kirchberg am Wechsel Unterschlupf bei einer Bauernfamilie finden. „Dort sind meine Schwester, mein Bruder und ich zur Welt gekommen. Mein Vater war damals beim Militär, bis 1942, da haben sie ihn zurückgestellt, weil sie draufgekommen sind, dass er ein Rom ist“, sagt Horwath. „1944 starb mein Vater bei einem Bombenangriff und von den anderen Verwandten hat nur meine Großmutter und eine Tante überlebt“, so Horwath weiter.
„Nach Abschluss der Volksschule in Kleinbachselten, bin ich mit 15 Jahren auf Grünarbeit gegangen. Ein Partieführer aus Großpetersdorf hat meine Schwester und mich mitgenommen. Eine Saison war ich dabei und danach habe ich am Bau gearbeitet. Ein Jahr später habe ich in Krieglach am Kabelbau gearbeitet. Und dort habe ich, als wir heimgefahren sind, einen Autounfall gehabt. Ich war mit jemandem mitgefahren und seitdem sitze ich im Rollstuhl. Mit 22 Jahren habe ich in Wien die Handelsschule besucht, welche ich nach eineinhalb Jahren absolviert habe. Diese Umschulung wurde damals von der Unfallversicherung bezahlt. 1972 habe ich mit meiner ersten Frau am Wochenmarkt in Oberwart Obst und Gemüse verkauft. Der Anfang war sehr schwer. Ich habe jedoch nie aufgegeben und so ist es mit der Zeit immer besser geworden.“
