Einen „wahren Menschenrechtsskandal“ stellt für den Generalsekretär von Amnesty International (ai) Österreich, Heinz Patzelt, der Umgang Europas mit Roma und Sinti dar. Bei einer Pressekonferenz in Wien anlässlich der Präsentation des ai-Jahresberichts 2010 kündigte Patzelt daher den Beginn einer Amnesty-Kampagne für Roma an. „Wir dürfen nicht zulassen, dass eine so große Minderheit in Europa auch im dritten Jahrtausend als Bürger zweiter Klasse leben muss“, betonte Patzelt. Jeder Staat sei verpflichtet, die Menschenrechte aller Menschen in seinem Staatsgebiet in vollem Umfang zu schützen.
