Am 27. Januar 1945 befreiten Soldaten der Roten Armee rund 7.000 zumeist schwer kranke Überlebende. Zwei Jahre später wurde auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen KZ eine Gedenkstätte errichtet. Das ehemalige nationalsozialistische Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau ist das weltweit wichtigste Symbol für den Holocaust. In dem zwischen den polnischen Städten Krakau und Kattowitz gelegenen Lager wurden im Zweiten Weltkrieg mehr als eine Million Menschen ermordet. Die meisten Opfer waren Juden aus dem von Nazi-Deutschland besetzten Europa. Auch rund 70.000 Polen, 21.000 Sinti und Roma, 15.000 sowjetische Kriegsgefangene sowie Menschen aus vielen anderen Nationen starben an Hunger, Krankheiten oder wurden getötet.
Am 27. April 1940 befahl der Reichsführer SS, Heinrich Himmler, in Oświęcim im besetzten Polen ein Konzentrationslager zu bauen. Knapp zwei Monate später wurden die ersten Häftlinge, Angehörige der polnischen Führungsschicht, ins „Stammlager“ Auschwitz gebracht.
