Im Jahr 1980 trat eine Gruppe Sinti auf dem Gelände der KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau in den Hungerstreik. Der Hungerstreik, an dem Romani Rose als Sprecher teilnahm, wurde zu einem weltweit beachteten Ereignis, das für das Gedenken an den nationalsozialistischen Völkermord und die Verbesserung der gesellschaftlichen Teilhabe der Sinti in Deutschland ein wichtiger Anstoß war. „Der Verband Deutscher Sinti und Roma ist Anfang der Siebziger Jahre von meinem Vater gegründet worden“, erzählt der heutige Leiter des Zentralrats Deutscher Sinti und Roma, Romani Rose. „Richtig aktiv sind wir erst Ende der 1970er, anfangs der 1980er Jahre geworden“, führt Rose im Interview für „Roma Sam“ weiter aus.
