Die Auseinandersetzung mit Verfolgung und Terror in der NS-Zeit ist vielfach auf Wissen und Erfahrung von ZeitzeugInnen angewiesen. Mangelnde Archivquellen sowie eine bewusste Verschleierung während und nach der NS-Herrschaft ließen das Leid einzelner Gruppen und Menschen über Jahrzehnte im Dunkeln. Mit der Oral History gerieten deren Leidenserfahrungen in das Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Zugänge sind im Fall der Burgenland-Roma dennoch relativ rar. Erst 2009 präsentierte der burgenländische Verein Roma-Service eine Edition von Interviews mit den letzten Holocaust-Überlebenden und deren Nachkommen. In einem weiteren Projekt wurden nun BurgenländerInnen mit unterschiedlichen religiösen, sprachlichen und sozialen Zugehörigkeiten gebeten, ihre Lebensgeschichten zu erzählen. Das Ergebnis ist ein beeindruckender Überblick über die Vielfalt der Erfahrungen im Burgenland des 20. Jahrhunderts, der über den Gegensatz zwischen Diskriminierung und Toleranz hinausgeht.
