Illegalisierung und Massenausweisungen aus Frankreich sowie Verfolgung und gewaltsame Übergriffe gegen Roma/Romnija in osteuropäischen Staaten haben die prekäre Situation von Roma/Romnija in Europa im vergangenen Jahr stärker in ein öffentliches Licht gerückt. Gleichzeitig zeugen die in Europa gegen Roma und Romnija gerichteten Gewaltakte und verübte Willkür von einer traurigen historischen Kontinuität der Verfolgung und Marginalisierung, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs ihren Höhepunkt erreichte.
Wie sieht jedoch die aktuelle Situation von Roma und Romnija in Österreich aus? Antiziganismus ist kein Phänomen, das ausschließlich osteuropäischen Staaten zuzuschreiben ist. Obwohl Roma und Romnija in Österreich eine anerkannte autochthone Minderheit bilden, haben rassistische Denkmuster und soziale Ausgrenzung gegenüber dieser Volksgruppe auf gesamtgesellschaftlicher Ebene immer noch alltäglichen Charakter.
