Durch ihr Engagement im Kampf gegen das Vergessen ist sie zur Leitfigur der österreichischen Volksgruppe der Roma geworden. 1988 hatte sie mit der Veröffentlichung ihres ersten Buches „Wir leben im Verborgenen“ das jahrzehntelange Schweigen der Roma gebrochen. Ceija Stojka wurde 23. Mai 1933 in Kraubath (Steiermark) geboren. 1943 wurde sie mit ihrer Familie in das Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager Auschwitz deportiert, in dem man sie mit der Nummer „Z 6399“ registrierte. Danach folgten die Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück und Bergen-Belsen, die sie mit ihrer Mutter und vier Geschwistern als einzige Mitglieder einer 200 Personen zählenden Großfamilie überlebte.
