Der Zerrissenheit zwischen den Welten, der Suche nach den eigenen Wurzeln und dem Trauma des Holocaust verleiht die Künstlerin Katarzyna Pollok in ihrer Arbeit einen kraftvollen Ausdruck, der nicht nur Ventil ihrer Empörung ist, sondern darüber hinaus die eigene Identität wieder freilegen und festigen soll.
1961 in Kiew geboren, in Polen aufgewachsen, in Berlin lebend: Die Malerin Katarzyna Pollok scheint die „traumatischen Erfahrungen“ ihrer Kindheit und Jugend nicht nur in ihrer Kunst verarbeiten, sondern auch räumlich überwinden zu wollen. In ihren Bildern, Zeichnungen und Collagen jedenfalls verhandelt Pollok die Erinnerungen einer Familie, die durch Krieg und nationalsozialistische Verfolgung geprägt war. Aber auch durch den heute noch allerorts präsenten Rassismus gegenüber den Sinti und Roma. Katarzyna Polloks Vater lebte während des Zweiten Weltkriegs lange Zeit versteckt, bevor er nach dem Kriegsende seine Herkunft leugnete, um zu überleben. Das Bekenntnis zur Minderheit der Roma sollte fortan innerhalb der Familie ein Tabu sein. Durch die Verleugnung der eigenen familiären Identität erfuhr die Künstlerin erst spät von ihren Wurzeln und ihrer Zugehörigkeit zur Roma-Minderheit. Heute spricht sie davon, dass die „Holocaust-Identität“ die kulturelle Identität ihres Vaters überschattet habe. Und dass sie selbst diese „Holocaust- Identität“ verinnerlicht habe
