Jenische, Karrner, Dörcher oder Laniger – so nannte man im alpenländischen Raum jene Leute, die aus der dörflichen Gemeinschaft ausbrechen mussten oder aus sozialen Gründen ausgestoßen wurden und mit ihren Plachenkarren (als „Alpen-Zigeuner“) durchs Land zogen. Die Jenischen schlugen sich mit Messerschleifen, Pfannenflicken, mit Kleinhandel, Gelegenheitsarbeiten und Betteln durchs Leben. In den 1980er Jahren gibt es noch mehrere Karrnerfamilien in Tirol. Sie leben meist arm, als Außenseiter in Baracken, Notunterkünften und entlegenen Siedlungen beisammen und gelten oft als „Abschaum“ unserer Gesellschaft.
Bert Breit (1927–2004), mehrfach ausgezeichneter Komponist, Journalist und Filmemacher, hat für den ORF ein zeitloses, singuläres Radio-Porträt geschaffen, das in eine wenig bekannte Lebenswelt führt.
