Endlich ist es soweit, die Musikschule für Roma- und Sintimusik in Wien, die Vienna Gipsy Music School nimmt Gestalt an! Der Verein Romano Centro, der sich bereits seit einigen Jahren um die Gründung dieser Musikschule bemüht, hat die geplante Errichtung der Schule angezeigt. Im Oktober soll der ordentliche Unterricht sowohl in verschiedenen Roma- und Sinti-Musikstilen als auch in klassischer Musik beginnen. In der VGMS sollen möglichst viele Instrumente und Stilrichtungen der Roma-Musik angeboten werden, begonnen wird mit Unterricht in Violine, Gitarre, Akkordeon, Klavier und Gesang, ergänzt durch Musikkunde, die sich speziell auch der Musik der in Wien lebenden Roma- und Sintigruppen widmet. Die kulturelle Selbstermächtigung stellt v.a. im Bereich der Musik eine Strategie zur Emanzipation in der Mehrheitsgesellschaft dar. Ein gutes Beispiel sind hier die Belgrader Roma-Band KAL sowie das Phänomen des „Roma Hip-Hop“, welches sich in den letzten Jahren als Ausdrucksform unter Roma-Jugendlichen u.a. in Serbien entwickelt hat. Die serbischen Wissenschaftlerinnen Dragana Antonijević und Ana Banić-Grubišić haben diese kulturelle Praxis des „Roma Hip-Hop“ erforscht und Interviews mit Angehörigen der Roma-Hip-Hop-Community geführt. Ihre Ergebnisse werden nun im Rahmen des ASO-Projektes: „Changing identities of Ethnic Minority Groups“ erstmals in Österreich präsentiert. Podiumsgespräch und Präsentation der „Studie zur aktuellen Bildungssituation deutscher Sinti und Roma“
Das Gandhi-Gymnasium mit Internat wurde im südungarischen Pécs im Jahre 1993 gegründet, damals besuchten 56 Schülerinnen und Schüler die Schule, mittlerweile hat sich die Anzahl mehr als verdreifacht. Offenheit hat hier einen besonderen Stellenwert. Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler, Roma und Nicht-Roma, sind willkommen und betreiben einen aktiven Austausch zwischen den Kulturen. Durch gute Schulbildung wird den Kindern die Chance gegeben, an Universitäten oder Hochschulen zu studieren, denn noch immer werden Roma-Kinder in Ungarn oftmals in Sonderschulen geschickt und ihnen damit die Möglichkeit geraubt, eine höhere Ausbildung abzuschließen. Die Schulleiterin der Minderheitenschule selbst, Gidáné Orsós Erzsébet, ist romastämmig und sollte ursprünglich eine Sonderschule besuchen
